Experience Corps, an award-winning national service program, is pairing an untapped resource -- people over 55 -- with an unmet need: public school students who struggle with reading. This combination is resulting in across-the-board improvements in student academic performance, as well as helping the tutors stay physically and mentally active and strengthening the entire community in the process. Older adults are retiring earlier and living longer than ever before, and many are looking to put their time, patience, and experience to good use. Experience Corps is helping them do just that. Now in 19 cities, Experience Corps works to solve serious social problems, beginning with literacy. Today 2,000 Corps members serve as tutors and mentors to children in urban public schools and after-school programs, where they help teach children to read and develop the confidence and skills to succeed in school and in life.
